Review by Allison Martin The NICU Rollercoaster is the touching true story of the early arrival of premature twins and the ups and downs of their 160 days in the hospital. Heart-warming personal blog posts are interspersed with helpful information for parents coping with the issues of very early or small preemies. Although larger at birth, their son (2 pounds 2 ounces) had a more difficult time than his little sister (1 pound, 9 ounce): often the case with boys. Ronan battled brain bleeds, NEC, surgeries, breathing issues and other all too common medical problems for tiny preemies, still needing a g-tube after coming home. His sister, Julie, fared better but still provides plenty of worrisome times for her parents, remaining on oxygen after coming home. Readers learn about parents' reactions to important events such as these, plus kangaroo care, TIP feeding, nursing staffing changes, brain bleeds, temperature control, and more. Medical overviews and tips on coping with these stresses are provided, as are a good set of references for additional education. This is a thoughtful presentation of a very difficult time. Preemie parents, their relatives, and others interested in the trials of parents and their tiny preemies during their time in the NICU will find much to enjoy and think about in this personal story. |
