Review by Allison Martin Preemies is one of the most comprehensive books for parents of preemies currently available. With over 500 well written pages on preemies and their care, Preemies will provide the answers to many of the questions you seek as the parent of a new baby or an older preemie toddler. A collaboration of a neonatologist and two preemie parents, this book is a well rounded overview of prematurity, the NICU and preemie care at home. Preemies provides complex medical and psychological information to parents in a reassuring tone as they cope with the rigors of premature birth and premature baby care. The NICU section explains the procedures, terminology, and course of events so that parents can understand what is happening with their tiny baby. Parents are encouraged to participate in the care of their babies through breastfeeding, gentle touch and other supportive activities. Designed to answer many of the questions that preemie parents will have during their time in the NICU much of the book is laid out in an easy to follow answers to questions format by topic. The extensive background in the book will make you a more informed parent - in the NICU and after. Very few issues are too small to be addressed. While the main focus is on the NICU, the many issues and questions that can arise after you bring your baby home are not neglected. Topics including early childhood medical issues, special needs, and early intervention are explained in easy to understand terms. |
